The key business components of Joerns Healthcare have always been strong leadership, perseverance and personal commitment from the company’s leadership and associates.
Founded in 1889 in St. Paul, Minnesota as Joerns Brothers Furniture by three brothers, Charles, Paul and Frederick Joerns, relocated to Sheboygan, Wisconsin in 1905. Charles Joerns bought out his brothers and ran a very prosperous but small company. In 1927, the company suffered a fire, which spurred relocation to Stevens Point, Wisconsin.
Joerns Brothers Furniture prospered in the 1940’s and 1950’s by manufacturing elegant and elaborate bedroom and dining room sets, which sold to upscale retail furniture stores for up to $1,000. Charles Joerns managed his company profitably until his death in 1941.
In the mid-1950’s, strong competition from the South forced Joerns Brothers Furniture into hard times. As the business faltered, Joerns Brother Furniture associates intensified their commitment to the company and accepted a 15% voluntary wage reduction with a promise of repayment including interest. Later, Joerns Brothers Furniture repaid 100% of this debt back to the associates.
Frederick Joerns’ son-in-law, Raymond Nass, joined the firm in 1959. Under his command, the company expanded into college dormitory furniture. Next, metal engineering was added and Joerns Brothers Furniture entered the health care market. Offerings included manual Hi-Low, fixed-height hospital beds and three styles of cabinets and chairs for hospitals and nursing homes.
The medical industry continued to gain prominence as the company’s leading market niche and in 1983, the company name was changed to Joerns Healthcare. That same year, Joerns affiliated with three other companies to form a new holding company - Sunrise Medical Inc. The formation of Sunrise Medical Inc. permitted a public issue of stock, which generated capital for new products and expansions.
The breakthrough FreeStyle® bed, introduced in 1991, broke new ground for Joerns Healthcare as well as the industry. The FreeStyle offered the convenience and economy of a manual bed, but without the hassles of hand-turned cranks.

Stature Lift
Stature Lift
Stature is Hoyer's flagship product which recognizes the true needs of
the modern care environment. With a safe working load of 500 lbs. and a
large lifting range, the Stature is able to cope with the most demanding and
technical resident handling situations.
- Straight mast design enables residents to move comfortably and
safely at a consistent distance from the equipment
- Scalloped base allows the caregiver to get close to the lifting load,
which helps keep the caregiver in a more ergonomic position while
performing the lifting task

Presence Lift
The Presence is engineered and designed to handle almost any resident-handling
task. With its outstanding lift range, the Presence can accommodate lifts
from the floor, as well as transfers to higher surfaces. The 500 lb. safe
working load and greater spatial area make this lift a perfect fit for
larger residents.
- The ergonomic foot pad assists caregiver with initiating movement
- The hand control clip holds the pendant in place when it is not
being used, preventing it from falling and possible damage
- The Presence cradle can be ordered with an optional scale to
simplify resident weighing

simple touch of a button - no bending or twisting
- Tapered leg design allows the Stature to be positioned closer to bulky
objects such as commodes, wheelchairs and large chairs during resident
transfers
- Sculptured base design allows caregivers to get closer to residents
during transfers, while concealing all working components
- Versatility in sling options: 6-point spreader bar and 4-point
positioning cradle, along with specialized slings, have been developed to
provide the caregiver with options when considering support, comfort and

Hoyer® Calibre
The Hoyer Calibre is a uniquely designed electronically operated patient lift
for the safe lifting of heavier patients. It is both sturdy and robust with a
safe working load rating of 850 lbs. The Calibre has been designed to be
configured with or without a weigh scale. The weigh scale is seamlessly
integrated with a digital display on both sides and user-friendly controls.

Featuring 600 lbs. of lifting capacity, the Hoyer HPL600 is a high-quality,
economical lift designed to meet the needs of more patients. The HPL600
combines the reliability of Hoyer with innovative features, such as a power-operated
base that can be stopped in any position, and directional wheel guide for
straight steering.
- Fully opened position of the base legs measures 47", which
accommodates use with larger bariatric furniture
- Easy-rolling, large 4" casters on the front and rear of base legs
- Base clearance of 4.5" allows the HPL600 to fit under most beds

HPL402 Lift
Designed to meet the needs of the caregiver as well as the patient, the
HPL402 features ergonomic handle grips to reduce back strain and a
mechanical down-release lever for non-powered lowering. The single-speed
actuator is reverse-mounted to give the patient increased leg clearance, and
the unit also features leg guards and caster bumpers to prevent damage to
walls and furniture.
